What is "Akira"? "Akira" is a 1988 Japanese animated science fiction movie, created by director Katsuhiro Otomo. It follows the story of Tetsuo Shima who has become imbued with telekinetic powers that lead him to attempt to take over Tokyo. Why Akira Is Worth Watching? The animation style in this film may not be up to par with today’s standards, but it can easily be forgiven considering how much creativity went into the set pieces and designs. It’s easy for viewers not to get bored as there are so many visual treats in it. Teshio, for instance, who is portrayed as an alien brain in a jar, is one of the most memorable characters in the movie. He declares himself to be "God" and takes over every building within his range. It’s pretty good that Tetsuo chooses to save him instead of taking out his power source because he knows that the only way he will get better is through this creature. There are many interesting ideas throughout this film that get explored without getting too heavy-handed about them. Why Is It Worth Watching Now? This film was released before an anime (of equal or lesser scale, anyway) had ever been made for TV broadcast in North America. This has made it quite popular in Japan. People are still talking about its success in Japan. At time of writing, the film has earned over 40 million dollars in the United States alone! It is being re-released in theaters all across America. How much does Akira matter to martial artists? A hypothetical question that deserves a long answer: First of all, we need to establish why we would care about Akira - and what it means for martial artists and the wider world of self-defense - at all? The movie did not produce any trends of interest to martial artists (so far as I and many others know). However, the manga and the anime it inspired did contain numerous elements that bear discussion: The biker gang in Akira is a "Tempest" gang - and we know that biker gangs have real-life counterparts in Japan. They do not go around shooting each other with guns. This is because the police do not look kindly on such activity. That does not, however, mean they do not fight at all - or use weapons. The "Tempest" gang fights with knives and pieces of wood (which they sometimes shatter over each other's heads). We can guess that this movie depicts how such real gangs might really behave when in a feud (fistfights and weaponless combat) and not in public (shooting). There are young boys in the streets of Neo-Tokyo that can use chi/ki/qi - manifesting it in their eyes. Chi is the Chinese equivalent of the Sanskrit nadi. Nadi are channels of energy or power, running through our bodies - or pervasive, subtle energies that are everywhere. Chi-users are people who can tap into this energy for various purposes (in martial arts, health and other things). There is a possibility that they can do so naturally (see here). cfa1e77820
