You might not know it by the name, but Indian cinema has been around for more than a century. And today, it is one of the most popular form of entertainment in the world. More than 700 million Indians live in the country, and around half of them watch at least one movie a month. That's more than the entire population of North America! The largest film industry in the world is also one of the fastest growing ones. It has been estimated that by 2020 India will be producing one film every four minutes. The Indian cinema started to take off around 1913 with Dhundiraj Govind Phalke's Raja Harishchandra. The first talkie was made in 1931 and another milestone came in 1947 with Kisan Kanya, India’s first color film. Nowadays, it is estimated that there are some 500 cinemas across India showing films continuously every day on average. Because of its long history, Indian cinema has some truly amazing moments and stars. Think of the legendary Amitabh Bachchan who played larger than life roles. Or Raj Kapoor, one of the most romantic actors to ever walk into a studio. Or Shah Rukh Khan who dazzled with his dancing skills in movies like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. And there are many future stars waiting to be discovered, like Prateik Babbar who is set to star in Bollywood Attack, a Hollywood financed thriller. The Indian industry produces over 1000 films every year, but only 100 are made in the Hindi language also known as Bollywood. The movies made in Bollywood follow a very specific formula: 70% of the time they will unfold against the backdrop of Mumbai, the most populated city in India. It is also one of the most glamorous and trend setting metropolis in the world. Movies set in Bollywood nearly always feature a love story and usually star a hero and a heroine. But there is more to it than just that. Devdas, for instance, is about an unrequited love story between two young people from different economic backgrounds. It was the highest grossing Indian film of all time at the time of its release in 1963. Bollywood films are full of songs and dance, so much so that they have their own name for them. For instance, a song is called a 'break', while an item number is called a "zabaan". That's right, you might be seeing things pop up on the silver screen that you've seen before in everyday life! Indian movies usually star foreign actors who play Indians. For instance Tabu has always been at heart of many Bollywood films. cfa1e77820
